If that's true, that's just plain scary. This whole world governence thing is truly like the movies.. the implications and precedent are truly awe-inspiring.

As sad as it is to say, I think this is inevitable. Too many people have seen their profitability plummet due to (for lack of a better term) hax. Though I agree with the rights of the End User to use the stuff they buy with their money for whatever they want, it's hard to deny that many industries have been brought to their knees by widespread piracy. They already have systems like this in place in Germany where you can get fined €600 PER SONG for an illegal download, so clearly, it is not impossible to implement.

It's only a matter of time before they bring the ban hammer down on us as well. Not saying it's right or wrong, just saying that it's bound to happen sooner or later.

I don't think there is any way to prevent it now, I mean it's being discussed undemocratically

Yes it's completely true, they're finalizing the details in Tokyo right now. Amongst the things being discussed are criminal charges for small-scale piracy, requiring ISPs to police their networks instead of just being a dumb pipe provider, well that's just part of the lovely stuff relating to internet use. This is supposed to become the largest trade deal since the formation of the WTO, and mainstream media can't even cover the story because the talks are done in secret. We're going to be waking up soon to a brave new world.

Here's what a Congressman who saw the details has to say about it:

This agreement hands the sovereignty of our country over to corporate interests.

The TPP has been talked about in different sources for at least a year, it's not new or anything it's just we're getting closer to the hammer finally being dropped on us. The number one concern is Canada joining this trade agreement will mean multinational corps will legally have the power to challenge Canadian law, and overturn Canadian law, if the corporate lobbyists allowed to participate in the TPP talks are successful in having their way. Basically laws regarding IP and internet use, that a lot of people have fought hard to keep free for us, may be rendered fangless in the face of corporations who will be able to file claims in extranational courts and basically sue our government for TPP noncompliance. This is basically like ghett0 said, an economic NWO that flies right over the head of most people who don't seem to grasp how dire the situation can get when you're talking about letting corporations strongarm the government into complying with laws that neither the public nor most of our public representatives are allowed to actually know about before they are signed into law. That's fucking scary.

It's gonna get uglier, dude. The internet is just the beginning. George Orwell's nightmare will come to pass in my lifetime if I live to be an old man, which is precisely why I made the conscious decision a decade ago never to have children.

Net neutrality fight in Canada has been going on for at least 10years and WE"VE BEEN LOSING!!!!
Bell got caught traffic shaping a couple years ago and had to back down after public outrage.
Rogers was also doing the same thing but was much more sneaky about it. link
UBB {usage based billing was passed and subsequently we've all been paying more since}. link
There are been countless bills proposed [bill 552 > bill 555 > ] they've all been struck down but we are coming to the end of the fight to keep net neutrality.

Anyone remember the proposed "lawful access bill" -spying by ISP's for the RCMP- which became Omnibus bill - they tried to pass that shit in bill C50 >which became C51> then C52. link

The CRTC and with all their faults have always sided with Canadians against these proposed bills.
This new TPP agreement will now force Canada's laws to comply with the shit state the corporations have made of US net neutrality laws.. Basically this sets the standard and the rest of the world will have to adapt.

Oh, it gets uglier. As "Foreigners", the NSA and American entities are "entitled" to spy on everything you do on American servers, including, but not exclusive to, sniffing on your Facebook, Google, Youtube, Amazon, Hotmail, Microsoft, and pretty much any American website you can think of's traffic, monitor and save it indefinitely to use for whatever unscrupulous purposes they so choose. We (Canada) used to do the same for them once upon a time before the Patriot Act made it legal for them to do this to their own people instead of just foreigners.

When it comes to the internet, you have no privacy. Everything and anything you do over their networks is subject to their scrutiny, from the torrents you download to the shit you search for on google and Youtube to the shit you post on forums and Failbook (which is a large part of the reason why I shut down my Failbook account, despite the fact that everything I already put on there is documented and saved until the end of time for them to use against me as they please.)

You can call it "Conspiracy theories" and paranoia all you want. You can either bury your head in the sand or you can be aware that the internet, which was the great land of freedom of expression of my youth, is now the primary tool being used against us by governments. Your cell phone is a GPS device with a (sometimes 2) cameras on either side and a microphone.

You
have
NO
privacy.

The only option is to detach yourself from the digital grid, but our world is making that increasingly impossible, despite evidence which suggests the more digitally dependent we become and, more specifically, the more we engage in "Social media" the more antisocial and depressed we become as people as our REAL LIFE social skills tend to suffer and erode.

There was a book written ages ago by John Fowles called "The Magus". It touches on this phenomenon of the damaging effect that mass media has on human beings as well as deeps pretty deep into the psyche of the modern male and how easily we can be manipulated, often subjecting ourselves to manipulation completely voluntarily. It's some scary shit, so if you like torrents and all that, enjoy it while it lasts. Big Brother is becoming more and more integrated into your day to day lives every day, and Canadians who say "Oh, that's an American problem, we don't have to worry" are either misinformed or naive.

We've being doing this same shit for just as long as the Americans have, and we're a hell of a lot better at keeping quiet about it, which makes it infinitely more dangerous. You can't fight what you can't see. Call bullshit on it all you like. You play perfectly into the hands of those who would be your masters and monitor your every move by refusing to believe that it's possible and marginalizing those who try to draw your attention to it. After all, they become far less effective at being a covert spy agency if they reveal themselves, and why should they if the Failbook population will ignore and belittle you without them having to? The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled is convincing the world he didn't exist, and people are all to easily fooled into ignoring the most basic facts because they saw a news report on television or read about it from an article someone shared on Failbook. And if it's on the idiot box or the Retard Society Website (Facebook) then it must be true, right?

Welcome to the age of Social Engineering and misinformation.

When they start telling people to get the micro-chip implant to act as a debit card / credit card and health card, I am the fuck out of here.

Yep. I think the end result will be a stratified digital society. There will be the consumers, who only get to access the shallow top layer of networks through the front-end interfaces (apps) and they will continue living in the panopticon as they already are, and then there will be the pirate rebels who will continue to do their thing over encrypted networks with tiered access levels. Then there will be the people who freak out and go hide in the mountains like ghett0 is suggesting. Btw, where in The Magus is mass media discussed? I read 3/4ths of the book a while ago and don't remember anything like that in it, just a bunch of psychological bullfuck that drags on for far too damn long

Wikileaks has a draft copy of the proposed TPP agreement. PDF link Txt link

Its a heavy read and its much worse than you think: [C/P]
The leaked documents show that the TPP will:
  • Replace carefully crafted Canadian laws with extreme Internet censorship rules drafted in secret by U.S. lobbyists
  • Give giant U.S. conglomerates the power to kick entire families off the Internet if their kids are accused of downloading the wrong content online.
  • Force your ISP to act as the “Internet Police”, monitoring your Internet use and even shutting down entire websites. This will certainly make your Internet bill more expensive.
  • For the TPP copyright terms, the basics are as follows. The US, Australia, Peru, Singapore and Chile propose a term of life plus 70 years for natural persons. For corporate owned works, the US proposes 95 years exclusive rights, while Australia, Peru, Singapore and Chile propose 70 years for corporate owned works. Mexico wants life plus 100 years for natural persons and 75 years for corporate owned works. For unpublished works, the US wants a term of 120 years.[corporations own 99% of digital copyrights]
  • TPP wants strong protection for DRM [digital rights mgmt] and make it illegal to circumvent DRM even if it has been applied to materials that are in the public domain In determining the amount of damages under paragraph 2, its judicial authorities shall have the authority to consider, inter alia, any legitimate measure of value the right holder submits, which may include lost profits, the value of the infringed goods or services measured by the market price, or the suggested retail price.
This are just some of the key points.

Will this kind of stuff affect us Brits too?
Like, do policies on internet useage go world-wide, or just for the country that implements it?

I've never been clear on politics and rubbish...

No, it will only affect signatory states. It looks like the Canadian trade rep has been pushing for IP/Internet-related laws that will respect our existing laws, which are pretty good right now. Most of the countries are basically against the U.S. trying to push the corporate agenda so hopefully they don't compromise on anything important
