thinking out loud:
in the 3 preliminary games, Germany was able to score only 3 goals total, in a single game vs Belarus which they still lost.
Yet they managed to score TWO on Canada! I am quite confident that should Germany have had an NHL-class golie, the final score might have been 4-2 at best.
Stamina is key, Canada will have less than 24 hours rest, and I do not buy the "Russia will be rusty" arguments, whatever steam Canada still has will be used up by the end of the first period, the second and third will only increase the gap in energy reserves.
Yes these are all world-class players, but there is always a limit.
Luongo is a better golie, but Nabakov is no slouch.
Russia's puck hogging mentality has been critisized, but i personally think this is a strength vs the "all-star team" mentality that the US and Canadian teams exhibit.
Likewise this pre-game mentality that the Russians dont pass could be used against the Canadians if the team all of a sudden does start to pass, after all these are professional players, maybe the hog-style game has been planned from the start, Russia didnt really have to try 100% considering the teams in their Group.
It will be a good game regardless.
I am not confident in either team enough to even make bets,
but I will be cheering for Russia.
