bleaaahhhh no luck finding it anywhere :S thanks for checking shotty j!

good lookin out mike, i put an order in after midnight friday and called just now and was told i could come pick it up tomorrow. it's great that they are doing business on weekends, i love shops that do work all days

unsurprisingly, i got fucked. i arrived more than a half hour before their advertised closing time and they were closed. that is just not acceptable. what really gets my goat is they CALLED me today and i confirmed i would be picking up the order and they still decided to close up early leaving me holding my dick.

yeah, i was considering it especially since NCIX was still open right across the street, but since that would mean a longer wait time i'd rather try reaching this bewawa place again and asking for a discount to compensate then if they refuse i can at least get the satisfaction of telling them off in person. i need that card, but i'll settle for giving them something to remember when they file for bankruptcy.

unbelievably they wouldnt even budge five bucks on the price for the inconvenience so i left them with the card and went to my trusted infonec who got it for me just as fast for about the same price.

anyway... my troubles did not end with the acquisition of the card. finally got it home last night and tried to install but it needs a pci-e x1 port and gigabyte's utter and complete lack of foresight happened to fuck me further by positioning the ram in such a fashion that the card could not plug into the mobo.

that's the point at which my eye started twitching uncontrollably and i began to entertain thoughts of becoming a supervillian bent on destroying humanity. fortunately, i had a backup mobo which does fit the card and it is now plugged in and humming away.

took some pics (linked so as not to analize the board):
old versus new
quarter inch penetration

that black shit on top with the creature etched into it is actually a faraday cage to prevent EM contamination. badass

breaking her in now, i can tell it's gonna take a loooong time to dial this in. the card is crackling and sputtering as the circuits get burned in snug. beautiful.

the SNR difference is amazing, this card makes youtube sound better than FLAC on the old card. the frequency contrast is so sharp it's impossible to pick EQ settings that are universal.

i listened to a couple of songs using the "7.1 virtual speaker shifter" feature, which is basically a 7.1 emulator for headphones, but it's really amazing at what it does. it brings a whole new meaning to the term 3d sound, letting me close my eyes and imagine where all the instruments are situated around me with the realistic clarity/lack of ghetto reverb that is completely beyond the reach of any "3d sound" emulation software i've heard before.

it actually got a bit tiresome listening to these on the goldring DR150s which are great cans but not much of a sound stage and the 7.1 emulator definitely demands a whole lot of space to separate the sounds well. with these headphones a lot of sounds tend to encroach on each other so that's disappointing but it reveals how much there is left to this card that i have yet to experience.

Siiick, sounds good man! I have yet to find a great soundcard that has a high quality rca input (for sampling turntables) as well as digital optical out (to my receiver to get dolby digital for mastering tracks)...
