cant help ya with the optical portage but i use a behringer ufo202 to rip wax. it's about 35 bux and pretty good sound!

Only $35, really? That's pretty good! I just use my tech 12 linked to my Vestax pcv-175, and a small rca-3.5mm adapter on the record out... my only concern is having an input with AT LEAST 44,110hz (44Khz) sampling frequency, so I get good quality on the sample. I would LOVE something 96Khz sampling, if i could ...I don't trust the regular "line in" on a built in (albeit great built in) soundcard :/
